A sunrise balloon flight is one of the most memorable ways to propose in Marrakech. You rise in the dark, the sky turns gold over the plains, and the Atlas Mountains appear on the horizon. It is also a proposal with a lot of moving parts: a pre-dawn pickup, a weather-dependent flight and a ring that must not end up over the edge of a basket.
We have photographed and filmed balloon proposals over Marrakech, and this guide covers what we have learned: when to go, which flight to book, how to keep it a surprise and how to make sure the moment is captured properly.
Why a balloon proposal works so well
- The light. Flights in Marrakech take off at sunrise, which gives you the softest, warmest light of the day, perfect for photos.
- The privacy. In a private basket, it is just the two of you and the pilot, high above everything.
- The story. Your partner thinks it is a once-in-a-lifetime trip activity. It turns into the day you got engaged.
When to go
Balloon flights around Marrakech run all year, but spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) usually have the most settled conditions. Winter mornings are clear but cold; summer mornings are warm and the haze can be stronger.
Reputable operators only fly at sunrise, as winds and heat later in the day make flights unsafe. In practice, that means:
- Pickup from your hotel or riad before dawn, typically between 5 and 7 a.m. depending on the season and the sunrise time.
- A 30 to 45 minute drive to the take-off area on the plains outside the city.
- A flight of around 45 to 60 minutes, followed by a Moroccan breakfast with most operators.
- About 4 to 5 hours in total, so you are back at your hotel before lunch.
Plan a backup day. Pilots cancel flights when the wind is too strong, sometimes on the morning itself. Book the balloon early in your trip so you can move it to another day without losing the proposal.
Private basket or shared flight?
For a proposal, we strongly recommend a private flight.
| Shared flight | Private flight | |
|---|---|---|
| Who is in the basket | Up to 15–20 other passengers | Just the two of you and the pilot |
| Approximate price | €120–220 per person | From around €240 per person, often €500+ |
| Room for a photographer | Hard to arrange | Possible with some operators |
| Good for a proposal? | You will have an audience | Yes |
Prices vary between operators and seasons, and they change every year, so always confirm the price and what is included (pickup, breakfast, flight certificate) before you book.
In the air or on the ground?
There are two ways to time the question, and both work beautifully:
- In the basket, as the sun comes up. The most dramatic option. Keep the ring in a zipped pocket until the moment, and agree on a signal with the pilot so they know when to give you space and stay steady.
- After landing, with the balloon behind you. This is our favourite for photos. The light is still soft, the balloon is deflating in the background, and your photographer can move freely around you for wide and close shots.
If you want the moment filmed in the air, check with the operator whether a photographer can join the flight, as baskets have limited space. If not, your photographer can capture the take-off from the ground, then meet you at the landing site for the proposal.

How to keep it a surprise
- Present it as a trip activity. “We are doing a balloon ride on Thursday” raises no suspicion in Marrakech; it is one of the most popular things to do.
- Keep the photographer low-key. On a balloon morning there are cameras everywhere, so a photographer at the take-off site rarely raises questions. Tell your partner the photos are part of the experience.
- Hide the ring well. Morning clothes have big pockets, but the box is bulky. A small ring pouch in a zipped jacket pocket is safer than the box in a backpack.
- Agree on a code word with your photographer, so they know exactly when you are about to kneel.
What to wear for the photos
- Layers. It is cold before sunrise, especially from November to February, then it warms up quickly. A jacket you can take off for the photos is ideal.
- Colours that work with the landscape: white, cream, terracotta, rust, sage or deep blue look great against the golden sky and the ochre plains. Avoid neon colours and large logos.
- Comfortable shoes. Landing sites are often in fields with uneven ground.
- No big hats. They fly away in the basket and hide your faces in the photos.
A sample proposal morning
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 5:30 | Pickup from your riad (the photographer can travel with you) |
| 6:15 | Arrival at the take-off area, inflation of the balloon |
| 6:45 | Take-off at sunrise |
| 7:45 | Landing, then the proposal |
| 8:00 | Couple portraits in the morning light |
| 8:30 | Breakfast together, now engaged |
Times shift with the season and the sunrise; the operator confirms the exact pickup the day before.
A word about drones
Drone shots of a balloon look spectacular, but flying a drone in Morocco requires official authorization, and drones brought in by visitors can be held at customs. Do not pack your own drone for this. If you would like aerial footage, ask your photographer whether it can be done legally on the day.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a balloon proposal in Marrakech cost? Expect roughly €240 to €500+ per person for a private flight, plus the photographer. Shared flights are cheaper but rarely suit a proposal.
What happens if the flight is cancelled? Operators usually offer another date or a refund. This is why we recommend booking the flight early in your stay.
Can we have a full photoshoot after the proposal? Yes. Many couples continue with portraits at landing, then a second session in a riad or the Agafay desert later in the trip. See our Marrakech photoshoot locations guide.
